Freemantle

My trip has hit a bit of a speed bump these days. Even though I am getting better hours at work, I am still second guessing my whole setup.

I have only been here for 12 days but still it feels like an eternity. All of my jumping around on my trip has spoiled me and give me a very short attention span. Even though I know I need the money and Freemantle is a beautiful place, I am starting to get bored just hanging around here.

Everyday, I get up and wander how fast I can pack my bag and get the hell out of here. I dont know, my trip is just lacking the adventure at the moment that I set out to get. I dont think I left home just to go be a waiter somewhere, or at least I hope not.

Its just isnt the same as it was in Asia. There isnt as much as excitement as there once was. There are no crazy bus trips like in Cambodia, no threat of guerrillas like in Loas, no run-ins with custom officials like in Singapore, no AK-47s like in Vietnam, no soliciting hookers like in Thailand, no old woman throwing up next to me like in Indonesia, no deportations like in Russia, no huge lizards like in Borneo, no menacing pimps like in Greece.

I dont know what to say anymore. Australia has been great but it all seems so tame by comparison. Everything is so clean and well planned. The food is edible and the people nice. Everyone can speak English and no one stares at me anymore. Police are always a shout a way and the only thing you need to worry about is your money.

I dont know.

I think Ill just have to bite the bullet for the moment and just make the best of it I can and save my pennies for tomorrow. . . . . .

The plan at the moment is to work here for as long as I can stand and make some money, find a ride and head north. I basically want to drive around the entire continent and get back to Sydney. I think it will take me three weeks once I leave to get to Cairns from Perth and then Ill take another 6 weeks to go down the East coast. Then Ill head to New Zealand for a month or two and then head home. Yeppers.

I was looking at flights and I think I can get from Sydney to Honolulu to Seattle to Portland to Washington DC for . . . . . . $750 American. I thought that was impressive. There is no reason for me to stop in Seattle or Hawaii other then I want to. But I have some friends in Portland I want to see. At the moment, I want to be home by Thanksgiving 09'. To get home by then I will have to begin my flight home by early November.

I really want to try and work Mexico and Cuba into my return trek some how. Just to slip some more excitement back into my trip before it ends. I desperately want to get into Cuba while its still illegal before it becomes just another Disney world. Im pretty confident I can make it happen.

ever thought about writing?

your blog is incredibly entertaining, and i'm sure you haven't put all your tales on here...

anyways, hope some adventure finds you in freemantle

I would read your travel book doug...so long as there is a thai brothel scene and an assasination of a rogue army captain in cambodia....

Thanks, I appreciate it. I think when I get back Ill try and put them all together to some degree.

No brothel scene but I did stay on an island owned by a Cambodian General.

Doug, I feel your pain. My entire time in Australia was spent thinking 'why am I not doing something crazy in Asia!?'. If it helps, in hindsight I did have a great time in Australia, it sure beats the weather at home although much more tame..

Make the most of it, is the best thing I can say.
